Henry Petroski in his book “The Essential Engineer” makes a case that without more investment in engineering we will not be able to tackle our global problems. In general, publishing isn't as critical even for academic engineers as it is for other subjects; there tend to be more objective ways of measuring our impact. The complete text of the lecture can be found here at Nobelprize.org. The boy is Australia has an international obligation to prevent its territory being used as a base for violence against other countries, but addressing this does not require detention. His latest book, titled The Essential Engineer: Why Science Alone Will Not Solve Our Global Problems, is about the difference between scientists and engineers and how science and engineering approach global problems. Thinking about the discussions at the recent Dagstuhl workshop I thought it would be appropriate to review the problems with research communication and ask to what extent open access can help solve them. Peer review depends on reviewers, who are only very indirectly rewarded for their essential efforts. Engineers have the techniques for improving processes, designs and building things. The timescale and order of magnitude for the loss of our biological diversity climate change due to global warming are negatively affecting both the physical and biological elements of nature. The human cost of our current approach was again exposed when a nine year old boy held in immigration detention was recently revealed to be so traumatised that he had been shoving sticks in his ears.
